Every breed of dog comes with its own health hazards. Shih Tzu is a basically healthy breed. Shih Tzus require a minimum amount of exercise. They will be happy as long as they are free to roam indoors with little amount of running around. They are good apartment dogs. Many people who are allergic to dogs and cats are not allergic to a Shih Tzu. They do not shed seasonally, instead, they shed in small amounts all of the time, just as humans. Their coat is more like human hair and should be treated as such. Bathing a Shih Tzu in a good conditioning human shampoo and conditioner is recommended. Bathing Shih Tzus in dog shampoo and conditioner can lead to flaking and excessive scratching over time.
Shih-Tzus thrive on human company and NEVER should be kept as a kennel dog. They should always live with their owner warm and comfortable inside. They thrive on human companionship and must be treated as one of the family. Owning Shih Tzu dogs can be the most delightful experience any family can embark upon. One of the greatest pleasures of owning a Shih Tzu puppy is to watch it grow from this small creature to a proud and intelligent family member. This however, takes a lot of patience, time and energy with a grand reward in the end. Your new puppy can be a member of your family for the next 12 to 15+ years.
